Our Excuse for Being Late to Church

We were just a little late to church yesterday but it wasn't because we couldn't get ready on time. We headed out the door only a couple of minutes past our usual time but since we usually arrive 10 minutes early we weren't stressed at all about that.  The kids were out the door first, stepping into a light rainfall and to their delight a small turtle was walking up the driveway.  They gathered round to admire it and like any wild creature finding itself surrounded by eager children it quickly searched for cover.  The closest cover was underneath the car.  It walked as quickly as it could and assumed a duck and cover position right next to the rear tire.

And there it sat.  As I am sure you know, turtles do not take well to prodding.  They will just sit tight and wait you out.  I didn't want to back over the turtle as that would really ruin the Sabbath for us.  We tried waiting quietly inside the car to see if it would continue on its journey but the turtle seemed to sense that we were still about and maintained its safe position under the car.  Finally I asked Lauren to watch while I backed up and let me know if the turtle moved or if my front tires were coming near it.  We managed to back out alright.  Finding itself once again in the open the little turtle decided its best course of action would be to once again seek cover.  This afforded us one more photo opportunity before we zoomed off to church now that we were definitely late.  That's our story anyway!
