I thought I better post something about our adventures with Emily so that we didn't get too bogged down by illness in the blog. Last Monday we headed to downtown DC to see some of the sights. Emily had been here last spring with a school group so we were trying to do something different than what she had done before. We decided on the American History Museum which has just recently reopened after a long renovation. We drove to Union Station then took the Metro to get closer to the museum and eliminate a long, cold walk. Here we are on the Metro. It was all of the girls first ride on it.
We sort of enjoyed the museum. It used to be my favorite one but the lines to see everything were very long. We waited to see the Star Spangled Banner which is quite impressive, but passed on the long lines to see the first ladies dresses and the Abraham Lincoln exhibit. We caught a glimpse of the dresses as we were exiting another exhibit. We could see half a dozen of them from the doorway and felt that was adequate. I am sure that the Lincoln exhibit would have been really good but the wait in line was over an hour and we were too impatient to just stand there. Our favorite exhibit was a lady with an interesting hairstyle. She had a lot of very curly white hair piled on top of her head and pinned into place. She looked like a mushroom crossed with a poodle. As she was standing near another lady with blue hair, they made a bit of a sight. We looked at a few of the less popular exhibits then headed to an art museum where we looked at paintings and sculptures until we decided that we needed some food.
We headed back to Union Station and found a food court. Lauren, Sarah and I were happy to see a place selling Gyros. Emily had never had one before but she was brave enough to try it. Either she liked it or she was just being really polite but she helped Lauren finish it off. Geral couldn't be bothered with food but she was thrilled to have soda to share with Mom as long as she was in control of it and I only got a sip when she dictated that I could.

We had a fun day. We didn't see everything but I guess it is always good to leave something to look forward to on another visit.
