In the Swim

Today Rachel swam for real. Face in the water, unplugged nose, arms moving, feet moving and she kept moving even when her head came up for air! Quite a change from two weeks ago when she wouldn't even think about putting her face in the water. I am so happy that she has gotten comfortable in the water. Every day when we go swimming, Rachel has been willing to try something new that has moved her closer to being a swimmer. It has been exciting to watch the fast progress she has made. At this rate, she will probably make it into the deep end before the summer is over.

Geral has also made great strides. Today she floated on her back without support at least until she realized that Lauren and I had moved our hands. Then she panicked and grabbed us. But she was floating unsupported and we gave her plenty of praise for that. Geral is still reluctant to put her whole head in the water but is willing to tip her face low enough to blow some bubbles. She also discovered that she can stand in the 3 ft section with her face just above the water. Some of the waves made by kids playing wash into her face but she laughs and deals with that just fine. She likes to be within an arms reach of the side of the pool, just in case.

William is practicing his strokes. I am hoping to get him a smoother crawl soon with proper breathing and would like him to learn some of the more restful strokes. He is looking better than at the beginning of the summer when I considered him just a good enough swimmer to be really dangerous in the pool. I feel more confident in his ability now which makes me happy.

I love having Lauren and Sarah at the pool with me because the little girls react so well to them. They are eager to be able to get out and play in the pool with their big sisters and trust them a lot when they are encouraged to try new things. Plus, it is nice for me to have some time to swim around myself. I was able to swim 10 laps today so I guess I can say I got my exercise.
