Positive Experiences

We have had some good experiences in the past week.  The kids all got their report cards from the first semester and each of them did really well.  Steven surprised us all by getting the highest grades.  He gets some pretty stiff competition from his sisters but managed to just edge them out this time.  It was the first time he has pulled straight As and he was quite pleased with himself.

Steven decided to try out for the high school basketball team.  It was a new experience for a kid who has never played on an organized sports team.  I picked him up from the first day of tryouts and he said to me, "I had no idea it would be so hard."  He stuck it out though and did everything he was asked to do.  He got some positive feedback from the coach.  He liked his attitude and perseverance and told him he would love to have him on the team but felt that he needed more experience.  There were 32 guys competing for 15 places on the team so he knew that his lack of experience was a drawback.  He would like to get some more experience this year and go back and try out again for JV next year.

Tonight was Young Women in Excellence.  Lauren and Sarah got to show of some of the projects that they have been doing toward their recognition award.  The leaders had put together a video of each girl sharing a little bit about herself and then sharing her testimony.  It was a very nice evening and was well done.  I think everyone left with a good feeling and a desire to be a better person.

William had pack meeting last Wednesday and his leaders sent them on a great scavenger hunt that ended with them receiving their pinewood derby kits for the upcoming races.  William has already begun designing his car for this year and has lots of great ideas to incorporate.  He also got to help with "scouting for food" on Saturday.  You wouldn't think that collecting bags of food off peoples porches would be exciting but William was so happy to participate.  The reason why is that his scout leader lets the boys jump in and out of the car as she slowly rolls it down the street.  William, for one, thinks that is the best.  Who knows what crazy fantasies fly through his imagination but it gets him to collect food enthusiastically and leaves a positive memory about that service rendered.  What more could you ask.

And since this is November and we are just a week away from Thanksgiving,  let me just add that I am so grateful for the leaders, teachers, coaches, family and friends who contribute so positively to my children's lives.  They provide enriching experiences and loving support as the kids try new things, gain knowledge, grow and develop.  All of them contribute to the well being of my kids and I am thankful to have them in our lives.
